Uvumi – A Thesixtyone Alternative
Posted on January 25th, 2010 by Sauli Hirvi
A few days have passed since thesixtyone did their radical redesign and made some major ideological changes. The site now feels like a lonely place, as they removed all visible signs of human interaction; neither comments nor recent hearts are to be seen. They also did away with the ability to download songs, and – I believe – buy, as one person at least commented that their 5–6 average daily song sales has dropped to zero.
In the midst of all the hate-filled comments at t61’s Facebook page, I noticed a link to uvumi.com. It seems to have a lot in common with the old t61. Like the old t61, Uvumi continues to play songs even when you navigate around the site, which is nice, and I don’t understand why t61 removed that feature as well. Creating your profile and uploading songs was a really pleasant experience as the interface has loads of polished AJAX details.
One thing I disagree with, in both uvumi and the new t61, is that you have to click a link to see a band’s songs. I consider the songs to be primary content, and profile information secondary. Let the songs speak for themselves.
Oh, and almost forgot to link to my uvumi page.
